IN MARCH OF last year, the pandemic came knocking, and everyone was suddenly obsessed with—of all things—toilet paper. Store shelves emptied out and remained vacant. People were selfishly hoarding, onlookers claimed, or just wanted to feel a sense of control amid uncertainty. Others rightly pointed out that people simply needed more toilet paper than usual if they were going to be home all the time, instead of going to school and to work, and that it wasn’t easy for the supply chains to reroute it.
